HUDDLE shut down for spring cleaning

Topps HUDDLE will be on hiatus for some spring cleaning.

HUDDLE should be back online over the summer. All teams will remain in tact and you will not lose your currently owned cards.

In the meantime, the Topps staff will be working hard to launch a new version of Topps BUNT for late March. Here’s something to get you ready for the 2013 season: http://bit.ly/YrMNzO

HUDDLE Super Bowl Rankings

image

We bet you’re happy that Colin Kaepernick was added to the HUDDLE depth chart midway through the season, just as much as 49ers fans are happy he took over Alex Smith’s job.

Right now Kaepernick has the highest HUDDLE rank of any player on the 49ers and Ravens heading into the Super Bowl. Prior to Feb. 3, we figured it should be useful to make roster moves or trades based on the current rankings since it’s the last chance you have to earn PTS this HUDDLE season.

So here it goes …

*Note: These are all players from the Ravens and 49ers who are currently featured in Topps HUDDLE.

1. Colin Kaepernick

2. Frank Gore

5 things to know today

In an attempt to infuse more original daily content - although we love the aggregation and curation method too - we’re going to throw a “5 things to know today” list at you most mornings of the week.

Here it goes:

1. BEARS HIRE NEW COACH: The search is finally over in Chicago. The Bears have hired former Montreal Alouettes’ coach Marc Trestman. He is the 14th coach in franchise history. Click to read more.

2. DENVER MAYOR HURT: Right away you’re saying to yourself, what does the Denver mayor have to do with the NFL. Well when any politician hurts himself trying to dance like Ray Lewis, it’s newsworthy. Click to read more.

3. NEWTON BACK TO SCHOOL: Mr. Auburn himself Cam Newton has enrolled in spring classes to finish his sociology degree. He isn’t granting interviews about his return to the classroom, and wants to assimilate to a normal college lifestyle this semester. Well, normal for a stud NFL quarterback who won the Heisman, won a BCS National Championship, was a No. 1 overall draft pick, signed a $22 million contract and makes more in endorsements. Click to read more.

4. THOMAS JONES DONATES BRAIN: He’s not done yet, but the former NFL running back is taking a proactive approach to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). He has decided to donate his brain to the Sports Legacy Institute to be studied for CTE. Click to read more.

5. UPDATED HUDDLE PACKS: Last but not least, HUDDLE is offering two updated packs this week. Every week until the Super Bowl we’ll update the “PLAYOFF” and “TOPPS PICKS” packs in the HUDDLE store to adhere to the playoff structure and teams who are eliminated from contention. If you’re wondering who is available in the Topps Picks pack, here are a few names: Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Colin Kaepernick and Joe Flacco. Interested now?

5 things on Alex Smith’s mind

We watched the 49ers-Packers game over the weekend and felt the same emotions you did: 1) wow, this Kaepernick kid is for real and 2) if I were Alex Smith I’d want to crawl into a hole.

While Alex Smith’s mind must have been racing, maybe even faster than Kaepernick racked up an NFL-record 181 rushing yards from his quarterback position, we tried to capture a few things he may have been thinking about.

1. “I wonder if that back entrance in the locker room is available immediately after the game. I have to duck out. Oh right, remember to say it’s ‘Colin’s night’ if any reporters actually do get ahold of me.”

2. “Hmmm, I wonder where I should sign next year. Arizona is warm. Kansas City has good bar-b-que. Oakland isn’t too far away. Maybe Rex will let me into his circus. There’s always Buffalo. No, no way, I hate snow.”

3. “How the hell did A.J. McCarron get that chick?”

4. “Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. Damnit.”

5. “Shoot. He’s fast. He’s really fast. Greatttttttttt.”

Jaguars fans have big week

It’s probably the first time you’ve read a headline like that since the Jags won the AFC Central in 1999. Can you believe the Jaguars were a playoff team once? I digress.

The reason for this post is to pay homage to Jaguars fans because last week they averaged more total PTS in HUDDLE than any other fan group in the app. That’s 989 PTS, narrowly edging the Browns fans who averaged 934 PTS.

I’m beginning to see a correlation here. Fans who root for teams will no chance or hope are spending more time using HUDDLE in the playoffs. Sounds good to us. Here’s to all the teams who are no longer in playoff contention and may your fans all download Topps HUDDLE for recreational purposes.

If you’re wondering who leads the season in PTS average for team fans, it’s the Seahawks (17,034), Patriots (16,956) and Packers (16,835), all playoff teams.

ADDEMSUBTRACTEM takes the week

It’s much easier to write the name BBKARO, but BB did not win this week in HUDDLE. He came in second to ADDEMSUBTRACTEM, who put up 265,616 to BBKARO’s 151,931. See what I mean, who wants to write out A-D-D-E-M-S-U-B-T-R-A-C-T-E-M!

It’s the largest margin of victory for an opponent over BBKARO this season.

BB, however, still has a commanding lead of the overall game with 1,232,578 PTS.

ADDEM is in second with 554,698 PTS, while MILLZEFFECT (501,458) and MMARKDG (419,723) are in third and fourth, respectively.

It’s almost impossible for AADEM to catch BB in the final two weekends of games, even if BB puts up 0, which would never happen.

The real race is for second. It’s up for grabs between the second through fourth place teams, and even some other dark horses not in the top five.

HUDDLE’s top playoff performers, round 2

The following is a list of the top playoff performers on every team from games this past weekend …

*San Francisco: Colin Kaepernick, 1,732 PTS: 17-for-31, 263 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception; 16 carries, 181 yards and 2 touchdowns

*Seattle: Russell Wilson, 1,214 PTS: 24-for-36, 384 yards, 1 interception; 7 carries, 60 yards, 1 touchdown

*Houston: Arian Foster, 1,156 PTS: 22 carries, 90 yards, 1 touchdown; 7 receptions, 64 yards, 1 touchdown

*New England: Shane Vereen, 1,121 PTS: 7 carries, 41 yards, 1 touchdown; 5 receptions,83 yards and 2 touchdowns

*Baltimore: Ray Rice, 854 PTS: 30 carries, 131 yards, 1 touchdown

*Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers, 782 PTS: 26-for-39, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception; 3 carries, 28 yards

*Denver: Peyton Manning, 751 PTS: 28-for-43, 290 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions; 1 carry, -1 yards

*Atlanta: Matt Ryan, 699 PTS: 24-for-35, 250 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions; 1 carry, 6 yards

Updates: Topps Staff Playoff Predictions
image

We’re done. We give up. Our Super Bowl winner and MVP picks are completely wrong and we’re miserable about it. But hey, we still get to write about football all day.
We had the Ravens losing in the first round to the Colts and the Broncos advancing to the AFC Championship. Obviously non of that panned. The Patriots are still alive, but we have them losing to Denver in the AFC title game, so it doesn’t really matter how it plays out at this point.
We were also on the Seahawks bandwagon - come on, can you blame us? - but as you Know, that didn’t work out either. Thanks a lot, Matt Bryant. The 49ers did beat the Packers.
Of the final four teams remaining we only have San Fran and New England. We’re not going to re-stack our bracket and pick again. We’ll leave that to you.

Here’s how it looks for us:

AFC

Wild Card 1: Colts over Ravens

Wild Card 2: Texans over Bengals

Division Round 1: Broncos over Colts

Division Round 2: Patriots over Texans

AFC Championship: Broncos over Patriots

NFC

Wild Card 1: Seahawks over Redskins

Wild Card 2: Packers over Vikings

Division Round 1: Seahawks over Falcons

Division Round 2: 49ers over Packers

NFC Championship: 49ers over Seahawks

SUPER BOWL: Broncosover 49ers

SUPER BOWL MVP: Peyton Manning
